The day opens with formal announcements by the Speaker, as required. These are usually concerned with the death or resignation of any MPs. There is normally no opportunity for a eulogy - except in the case of the death of a Prime Minister, former Prime Minister, or Leader of the Opposition, after which the house will adjourn. Strictly speaking, it is not possible for an MP to resign, so an MP who wishes to leave the House is appointed to the nominal Crown office of either the Chiltern Hundreds or the Manor of Northstead. No duties are involved and no fees received.
